Giveaway: A Raw Food Cookbook!

June 22, 2011 Giveaways

First things first … the winner of the I’m Organic Giveaway from last week is Stephanie! Congrats, and I believe you will have a cute eco-friendly mug coming your way. For those who didn’t win, you can still check out the I’m Organic website for cool stuff (they recently lowered their prices – now cheapo me thinks this stuff is a deal!), and I have another giveaway ….

This week you could win The Raw Truth: Recipes and Resources for the Living Foods Lifestyle by Jeremy Safron …

It’s finally summer, so I couldn’t imagine a better style of “cookbook” to have than one that doesn’t require you to turn on the oven or stove!

This book has a nice informational guide section at the beginning, giving a low-down on raw foods and some of those details that may be fuzzy for us newbies (sprouting, culturing, dehydrating, which foods are classified as raw, how to make the transition, health benefits, etc.), followed up by a plethora of recipes. Today on Go Dairy Free, I note the recipes that caught my eye in terms of which I would want to make, but here are some other recipes in this book that sound really intriguing:

  • Ruby Cooler
  • Fruit Rawies
  • Creamy Carrot-Ginger Soup
  • Cauliflower Chowder
  • Apple Cinnamon Essence Bread
  • Chile Mole
  • Tamales
  • Tribal Wild Rice Salad
  • Brownies
  • Ultimate Sundae
  • And the list goes on …

To enter, just comment here on your favorite raw food recipe. If your like me, it is probably a smoothie or salad, but maybe some of you have done a little more adventuring in raw foods!

The winner will be picked next week!

Yep, no surprise here, my favorite is a smoothie – with either beets or pumpkin and almond milk and cocoa. Lame, yes. But SO good and it never fails to disappoint.

I’ve never tried the raw food method of eating. Would love to try some of the things in it! We enjoy smoothies at our house, so I’m sure that would be the hit for us.

Ooo – that’s a close call between raw key lime pie (awesome!) and a liver cleansing carrot salad that is easy to dress up with pineapple and raisins and then toss with olive oil and lemon juice (the liver cleansing part). Good stuff 🙂

I have been working on incorporating more raw food into my diet, so this cookbook would be great to have. I’ve eaten lots of tasty raw dishes, but I think my favorite is still fresh fruit eaten out of hand.

Can’t remember who I got this from, but it’s a fab ‘soft-serv’ ice-cream-type dessert. In my Vitamix (can use a food processor) I toss 3 frozen bananas (no peels, of course), 1T+ raw almond butter, and 3 pitted Medjool dates. Add a little water (I eyeball the amount) to make it easier to mix, then process till smooth. (If you add more water, it’s like a frozen smoothie, less for dessert consistency.) During strawberry season we add fresh-frozen berries. Yum!

The avocado lime pie I’ve had a few months ago at a raw food restaurant was amazing! I really should recreate it at home… Maybe there’s a recipe in that book? I’ve got to check it out!

My favorite raw recipes are the “apple pie” and “weekend taco special” from Raw Food: A Complete Guide for Every Meal of the Day by Erica Palmcrantz and Irmela Lilja. I purchased a food processor just so I could try raw food “cooking” and this was my first cookbook. The look on my husband’s face when I told him I was making raw apple pie was priceless – and then he LOVED it! He also loved the raw tacos and I loved him for always being willing to try anything that I can “cook” up! 🙂

I do drink fresh juiced vegetables most mornings, but also love raw beets – the roots and the leaves – in salads. Date and nut bars are another favorite. They can be flavored lots of different ways or just left plain.

yum, yum, yum, yum. I think my favorite raw food recipe is raw Pad Thai. It involves kind of a lot of ingredients but it’s worth it! So creamy and a crowd-pleaser. That or tahini kale salad.
    🙂

    Good luck to me!

I am really hooked to juicing right now. I love a great smoothie, but there’s just something satisfying about adding carrots and other veggies that you normally couldn’t add to a smoothy. Raw cooking seems like the logical “next frontier” for me to delve into. Thanks for the giveaway! And thanks for your blog– you are so real with yourself and yet so full of wonderful wisdom for all of us!
