Summer Reading Series Giveaway: Vegan Comfort & Spice Cookbooks
Okay, I know what some of you are thinking, who won the last two giveaways? I was on vacation, and unfortunately couldn’t get internet access to wrap up those giveaways (yes, those last couple of posts were scheduled – I confess!). So what I am going to do is announce the winners of all three giveaways next Tuesday, and I will leave them all open for entry until then! So if you missed out on entering the Divvies Cookbook Giveaway or the Vegan Dessert Cookbook Giveaway, you can still enter those and this one through Monday, August 30th.
This week’s giveaway is from one of my favorite publishers, Vegan Heritage Press. One winner will receive a copy of each of the following cookbooks:
American Vegan Kitchen – I call this one “greasy spoon meets the American bistro.” Full of comfort foods and adventurous recipes, this is much more than your basic run-of-the-mill vegan cookbook.
- My Review: I sampled several of the recipes, this review highlights just a few!
- Sample Recipe: They allowed me to reprint one of the recipes I enjoyed, Smokin’ BBQ Portobello Mushroom “Sandwiches” with homemade Q-sauce.
Vegan Fire & Spice – I love that this book focuses on spice in terms of flavor and not just heat. Many of the recipes are actually not “spicy” at all (but don’t worry heat fans, true to name, there are some “fire” recipes!), but every recipe is packed with flavor and the global theme keeps things interesting and unique.
- My Review: I’ve yet to meet a Robin Robertson recipe I didn’t like.
- Sample Recipe: Enjoy this recipe for Close to Callaloo.

Comfort food: our local version of sheperd’s pie (pâté chinois) – my veganized take on it, of course!
Hmmm, comfort food. I think for me it’s just pasta….with tomato sauce or mac n’ cheese. Mmmmm.

Homemade cinnamon rolls are always good! A Daiya cheddar cheese sammy gets my vote as well. Or a nice warm bowl of miso. Vegan kasha varnishkas is also a family favorite. All feel good foods =)
I would love this cook book because not only am i intolerant to Milk Protein but i’m also trying to general live a healthier lifestyle, following the Hippocrates Health Institution believes that living a raw food/ Vegan diet and exercising the body and mind prolongs the individuals lease on life and eliminates illness and ailments. Unfortunutly my knowledge of yummy tasting Dairy free/ vegan recipes is some what limited, i would really love to not only varie my diet by knowing more recipes but more importantly would love to start loving food again, love making yummy food and eating delicious tasting food, especially deserts 🙂
oooops 🙂 (previously post posted in wrong place – sorry), Comfort food to me is being able to eat yummy tasting food that doesnt upset my tum, all food is comfort food if its good, tastes good and is home made 🙂
I would love the “American Vegan Kitchen”. Now that I am eating more vegan choices my family has started to enjoy eating healthier. This book would be a great addition to my new collection of cookbooks. Thanks!
Posted the give-away on my facebook too.
Signed up to receive e-mail updates too. Hope I win the “American Vegan Kitchen”. :)!
Comfort = Deep dish apple crisp with vanilla ice cream. I’m going to post this on my facebook page.
I’d love Robin Robertson’s book (already have Tami’s). 🙂 Comfort food? Gotta be good ol’ fashioned chocolate chip cookies.
Comfort food is a big hearty breakfast and warm coffee!

Comfort food is anything I grew up eating, stuff my mom made. This can be difficult now that I’m dairy-free! My favorite comfort foods are mac n cheese (homemade, not like from the box), and chocolate chip cookies dipped in soy milk. Yum! 🙂
I just posted the link on facebook!
I already get both OFF and GDF posts via e-mail. 🙂 I would love to win American Vegan Kitchen!
American Vegan Kitchen definitely says comfort food!
I added this giveaway on my blog post: http://ameliefille.blogspot.com/2010/07/vegan-eggplant-timbale.html

Comfort food is a large bowl of pasta…. usually bolognese, but surely there’s a vegan way of doing it!
Comfort food for me is definitely pasta of some kind.
I love a good soup or stew as comfort food (somehow I think of wintery situations when comfort food comes to mind)
-K
My mom’s homemade falafels are my favourite (though unconventional) comfort food. 🙂
Mmm…comfort food – food from my childhood used to be comfort food. Most of that doesn’t qualify anymore. So, now I think peanut butter is my favorite comfort food.
Mine would have to be warm and spicy ethnic food dishes. Indian food comes to mind immediately. I would love both of these books, but especially Vegan Fire & Spice!
Comfort food always has been and always will be my mom’s tofu spinach lasagna. In fact, I’m getting some for dinner on Saturday!
Comfort food for me is carbs… bread and Earth Balance (vegan butter), a bowl of brown rice (and butter), a baked potato (and butter). Maybe butter is really my comfort food??
Thanks!
Comfort food to me means going back to my South Asian roots: dal with rice.
My favorite comfort food is probably mac n cheese, although mashed potatoes might come in as a close 2nd.
Signed up for emails!
comfort food = mac and cheese, deep-dish pizza, mashed potatoes and gravy, or warm homemade cookies, yum.
At this point in my life on a strict allergen-free diet with my little one comfort food is cereal. I like to have a bowl before bed each evening.
macaroni and cheese, hot hearty vegetable and noodle soup with a good toasted bread and hot apple pie!!!
My favorite comfort food (aside from ice cream since that’s not technically a “food” 😉 is creamy corn chowder with great bread on the side.
Comfort food, to me, is something that is incredibly healthy but doesn’t taste healthy. Like hearty minestrone with fresh bread or a spicy chili. A food that after you eat it you feel all warm and good. Almost makes me wish it wasn’t summer right now
Did I win yet???? Another comfort food for me is a tahini covered salad… not sure why but the creaminess does it for me every time!
Comfort food to me would have to be a recipe my mom made many times while we were growing up as kids. It should be warm, hearty, and delicious. I’m thinking her mac & cheese, roast beef dinner, or countless turkey dinners on holidays.
Comfort food means totally yummy in the tummy, like a nice Indian Dal that caresses my tummy with goodness!
posted to my Facebook!:)
Hi, Alisa. Thanks for the fun giveaway chance!
For me, mashed potatoes come to mind as comfort food first, before all others.
Dan
I have now subscribed to your fun site!!
Vegan mac n’cheese, scrambled tofu, and sweet potato pie are some of my favorites.
I would love to win a cookbook…comfort food to me are 2 things. Macaroni dripping with cheese and I’m very sad to say I haven’t had it since gluten/dairy/soy/corn free. Second..chocolate cake with chocolate icing…haven’t had that either.
Thanks for the great blog.
I was sure I’d left a comment, but don’t see it here. . . if I did, please delete this one. Would love the Fire & Spice book! And nothing is quite as comforting as chocolate chip cookies–raw OR baked. 🙂
Wow.. prior to eating vegan, my comfort foods were: Italian (fettucine alfredo, pizza, lasagna), Mexican (burrito, nachos, enchilada). Of course, ANYTHING made with or topped with Cheese (mac and cheese). And, ANYTHING chocolate, caramel, or peanut butter.
I am new to vegan (with a dairy allergy) so I am still discovering my new comfort foods. So far – Daiya cheese and Coconut milk ice cream are fantastic – Not together though:) “Faustess Cupcakes” from Vegan with a Vengeance and Robin Robertson’s Chocolate Surprise Brownies have both been winners in the chocolate dessert’s category. What an exciting adventure!
Just posted this on facebook! 🙂
I receive the email updates too for both One Frugal Foodie and Go Dairy Free. Thanks!!
Spaghetti with a chunky veggie sauce and warm garlic bread.
