These Chocolate Chips are not for the Bears
I could use some of your creative brain power. I need to make a few recipes with these …
They are awesome (I will be writing about them soon), but my ideas are running up short. What recipes might you like to see me make with these chocolate chips? Though chocolate chip cookies are my all time favorite dessert, that is probably a bit too ordinary of a concept. I need something somewhat seasonal, something that uses easy to find ingredients. I will be making the recipe dairy-free, so an old idea made new is a possibility too. Any ideas?
Not to steal Katie’s weather thunder, but oh my goodness …
Guess who’s going to be baking cookies (hopefully chocolate chip filled ones!) and drinking hot tea (INDOORS) for the next three days. My eyes went first to the snow (and, um that “white out” picture was a new one for me – looks like excellent driving conditions), but then I spotted the temperatures. A HIGH of 21 degrees in November? Get out the thermals and the warm fuzzy blankets, crank up the oven, and find those slippers, Alisa is officially going into early season hibernation.
Just like I hope this mama and teenage baby are doing right now …
They were in our backyard last week having a snooze pretty well all day. This photo was taken from the other side of our sliding glass door … we aren’t insane you know! The little guy was actually snoozing and rolling around back there for several hours without a care in the world. Mama joined him later for some chill time.
Our photos of mama when she was moving didn’t come out so well, but you can see a little more of her cute face here …
She is HUGE! Seriously, the picture doesn’t tell. Her little one was about the size of me (but probably double the weight), but she was gosh, I don’t know, at least 400 to 500 lbs or so. Not as big as the 700 lb bear vandal that likes to break into garages and churches and steal peanut butter (seriously, I couldn’t make this stuff up!), but pretty big. Mama was tagged already, so here’s hoping they are back in the mountains now.

I’d like to see this recipe remade. 🙂

Keep up the excellent work!
Ooh, that sounds like a rich one Joel. So many different ways to experiment with it too (with or without egg yolks, with or without buttery margarine, etc.), I’m putting this one on the list. Thanks!
Here are three dairy-free, gluten-free, egg-free recipes (all contain nuts though):
– trail mix: we like dried cranberries or cherries, chocolate chips, and almonds
– power bars: http://www.elanaspantry.com/power-bars/
– flourless chocolate chip cookies: http://www.nourishingmeals.com/2009/12/gluten-free-vegan-flourless-chocolate.html
How about pumpkin chocolate chip cookies (or muffins) or a chocolate zucchini cake?
I make a bar cookie using almond flour, chocolate chips, dried cherries and coconut. Very yummy! It is a knock-off added onto version of one of Elana’s cookies in her Almond Flour Cookbook. I love the almond flour and it works so well with chocolate chips.
I think that storm is heading my way – I’ve got a similar forecast starting on Mon/Tues next week. I guess I should get outside this weekend and enjoy it while I can!
Somewhat seasonal and chocolate chips.. Do you like biscotti? I see cranberry biscotti with either chocolate chips in them or with a chocolate drizzle. Last year I made chocolate peppermint biscotti, which would also be good with a drizzle or some chips mixed in.
Or cranberry nut bark?
Or cranberry chocolate chip scones?
Or OH MY GOD, these: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Chocolate-Peppermint-Bar-Cookies-236672
OH MY GOSH! Those bears were in your backyard???? Kinda scary.. but cool! Hopefully they make it safely back to their home.
Chocolate chips! YUM. Ok… here are some ideas (and they are totally off the top of my head):
*Chocolate laced pumpkin pie (chocolate crust with chocolate chip pumpkin pie filling.. oh my… I just surprised myself with that one!).
*Chocolate chip pumpkin muffins (??)
*The Chocolate Chip Cookie Bowl (how freakin’ awesome is this?!?!?!?!? http://ruhlman.com/2009/06/the-chocolate-chip-cookie-bowl-sundae.html)
Sooo cool! And slightly scary 🙂
Some version of eclair with the chips in the middle. yum. Maybe made with a biscuit?
Okay those pics are crazy! Reminds me of that movie with Sarah Jessica Parker – Did you hear about the Morgans? Or something like that! How lucky to get so close to bears! But what if you wanted to run out to the compost? Crazy! I think you should make some chocolate chip biscotti! Have fun!
Bears! That is awesome.
I have a general recipe that I can’t give specific measurements for (because I hate measuring) that is dairy free and gluten free.
About 20 pitted dates, 1 cup of chopped pecans and 1-2 cups of melted chocolate chips with a dash of shortening mixed into it(I just use the microwave).
Stuff the dates with the desired amount of pecans, dip in chocolate and place on parchment paper to dry. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Enjoy!
bears in your backyard?? holy moly! you are one brave soul!!
wow. that’s pretty crazy… we live kinda remote and have SMALL critters that Basil Pup loves to chase… don’t know what he’d think about those two in our yard!! 😀
First… the bears. OH MY HEAVENS. That is insanely awesome (seeing as the only animals we get in our front yard are kangaroos).
The chocolate chips? Hmm… I tend to eat chocolate more than I cook with it (which means that you should probably send me a bag of that chocolate so I can get the creative juices flowing 😉 ), but my first thoughts were:
chocolate granola
some sort of dairy-free chocolate fudge (because I’ve never seen dairy-free fudge here in Australia and therefore need a recipe)
chocolate + some sort of fruit (berries?) clafoutis
And something with peanut butter. Or nutbutter. Because you must. 😛
I will have to think of some ideas for the chocolate chips, I have a ton, but I just got home from a 7 year olds bday party and my mind has shut down.
But i just had to tell you that those bears are sooo unbelievably cool. It is what I love about Tahoe so so much. We always would see them up by Alpine Meadows and it always fascinated (and frightened) me! Ahhh! And snow for Thanksgiving? How lucky are you! Although 21 for the high sounds a big frigid.
Pumpkin chocolate chip scones! Or pumpkin chocolate chip blondies! Or pumpkin chocolate chip muffins! Are you noticing a trend? 😛
oh wow, i don’t think i’m quite ready for snow yet as it’s been nice here for november… and bears, oh my! 🙂 i’m thinking you might need some hot chocolate!!
These are all fantastic ideas; thank you all so much, and feel free to keep them coming!
Yes, bears are all too common down in the village where I live, so we do see them occasionally, but rarely all snuggled up in the backyard! Now that the snow is flying, hopefully they are all safely hibernating!
Yikes! I enjoy cold weather, but not THAT much snow! ANd htose bears are cool! Sorry I don’t have any ideas at the moment, although I did click on the link for the flourless choc chip cookies someone mentioned above and nearly impulsively closed my laptop to go make them RIGHT NOW. (the fact that I have already eaten 2 slices of leftover pie and have far exceeded a reasonable amount of sweets-eating these past few days stopped me)
Whoops, just saw my typos as I was submitting. Please ignore!
