Pomegranate Peanut Butter Creaminess
There is something that I have learned lately about the food industry. I may be the last one in on this secret, but it is still fantastic to realize. Demand quality and the prices go down. Of course, I do remember the basics of those ecomonics classes regarding supply and demand. But actually seeing it first hand is another thing. Did you notice how the big almond trend has lowered almond prices? Almond flour, almond milk, almond butter … and suddenly I can get a half gallon of almond milk for $2 and a pound of almonds for $4 without a problem (just two years ago, both were more than double this at my local grocery store!).
And yet again I have seen this phenomenon with pomegranates. I kid you not, before last year, I had never, ever had a pomegranate. I mean, I knew they existed, but not at my grocery store. Okay, I saw them there once, about four years ago for $4 a piece! Yeah, right. Then POM came on the scene, and suddenly I can pick up an in-season pomegranate on sale for $.99. Oh yeah baby, in the cart you go.
Take advantage now though … thanks to our government and the fed, our food prices may soon see a big spike. That holiday sugar will most definitely be jumping up in value, but thankfully, with those pomegranate seeds and just a couple kitchen staples, I don’t need (as much) sugar …
I know what you’re thinking, a shake? Seriously Alisa? Isn’t it fall? Well, technically, its already winter where I live. The snow has started flying, and it is sunny, but hovering around freezing degrees outside my window. But, I’m in that camp of cool and creamy is good year round … especially with the heat on.
This is really an un-recipe, but so yummy, that I had to tell you about it. I know the whole “banana soft serve” thing is old news, but this isn’t soft serve, it’s breakfast. Okay, it was my 2nd breakfast of the day, and now I’m going to make lunch. What can I say, I like food.
Peanut Butter & Pomegranate “Jelly” Smoothie
This ridiculously out-of-season, but in-season, un-recipe is Vegan, Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Gluten-Free, and Soy-Free. You can make it Peanut-Free and Nut-Free with sunflower seed butter.
- 1 Overflowing Cup of Banana Chunks
- 1 to 2 Tablespoons Creamy Peanut Butter (1 heaping tablespoon works)
- 1/8 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
- 1/2 Cup Water (or more as needed)
- A Bunch of Pomegranate Arils
Blend the banana, pb, cinnamon, and water until smooth and creamy. If you have a wussy blender like mine, pulse several times to get things moving. If you just try to fire it on, it may go nowhere. You can always add more water if needed. Pour into a glass and throw on as many pomegranate seeds as you like.
The flavor is reminiscent of PB & J (to me at least), but the crunch of the aril seeds adds texture.
Makes 1 guilt-free serving

Yes, the more demand, it becomes more mainstream, and cheaper! woo!
I have a confession … I don’t like jelly, but I love the pom arils! This looks fantastic, Alisa. Now if only I had some pomegranates in my store. We get them for a very limited time and I’ll be surprised if they are that cheap. Did you know you can freeze the arils? I’ve done it and it works great. Makes those deals last a bit longer. 🙂 I spread mine on a baking sheet, freeze, and then pour into a freezer container, so I can take out as many as I want in the future. 😉 Thanks for this recipe (or concept), Alisa!

This shake looks great! Good food is good food regardless of the time of year. I love the idea of putting the pomegranate arils into the shake.Of course, I pretty much love all things pomegranate.
Now, if only these kind of demands would hit Australia! Sadly almond products are all still very expensive here 🙁 I’m tremendously excited by this PBJ smoothie though, regardless of cost 😉
I must live in a black hole of demand, because this is not going on here! Almond butter is still way out of my price range.
I don’t like pomegranates….shhh. I know. Coconut, flavored pb, now pom? I am going to get kicked out of blog-world!
You are too funny! I have noticed the almond prices falling. Saw $2.99 a pound for roasted new crop almonds in the grocery ad. Making my own almond butter this weekend! This sounds so tasty. And unique. But that’s why I love you!
Your economics analysis is so true and is exactly why we need to fight for quality products! I love love love love pomegranates and think that this smoothie sounds fabulous! Winter or not.
love this pb&j twist 🙂 and i’ve seen them for 2.50, but i suppose they have to travel a bit further 😉
I’m so jealous- The cheapest I can get for pomegranates is still $2.50 a piece around here. And even those are pretty darned small for the price.
Alisa, what a totally interesting flavor combo! It sounds amazing! I will have to give this one a try. We have lots of pomegranates in our stores right now! Pomegranates always crack me up, because they bring me back to my childhood where I vividly remember my Mom making us strip down to our underwear every time we were eating and digging out the seeds. They do stain very badly!! 😉
This looks fantastic! Pomegranates are still kind of spendy where I live, but fortunately I’m on vacation in a sunny clime, and I just picked one up for $0.99. I see this recipe for breakfast tomorrow, although I might substitute soy milk for some of the water.
I just adore pomegranates! I usually don’t put them in other foods because I just love to eat the arils straight. Your smoothie sounds good. . . and the pomegranate sounds good. . .but together, they just remind me too much of bubble tea!! I would give the base a try on its own, without the “jelly,” though. 🙂
I KNOW! I’m so excited that almond milk is so much cheaper now. Makes my wallet (and me) happy. This looks delicious. I love the use of banana chunks too.
I was SO excited when I got this email because I had ALL the ingredients already!
I just made mine and will twit pic a photo of it – mm mm good.
Yea here in Canada at Metro Poms are now 99c a piece! They’re still ridiculous at specific spots like Whole Foods but I am sipping on mine with a straw and spooning the arils! amazing
Not sure about the above commentor from Canada, but I have never seen pomegranates for $.99! If they go on sale here they are usually $3 each, or $2.50 if you are lucky. And ain’t no such thing as cheap almonds and almond products. Again, if I can get a litre of almond milk for $2, I’m doing good (that’s about 1/4 gallon). But it’s all good, because that’s what food costs here, and you grow up used to it 🙂
before 2 weeks ago I had never had a pomegranate! I just was too intimidated to buy them. When I did, I saw how amazing they were and look at all these recipes. That smoothie would be perfect for our liking! Thanks ALisa!!
